A Love Sandwich: Jacques Forestier, violin and Elizabeth Dorman, piano

April 28 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm PDT

This event is now sold out. See you at the next house concert!

We’re delighted to present our 2022 fourth prizewinner, violinist Jacques Forestier, in concert with Klein-favorite pianist, Elizabeth Dorman. Join us as we collaborate with the beautiful Maybeck Studio in the Berkeley Hills and reflect on love in all its nuance.

Seating and tickets are extremely limited. Note that we will encourage masks but not require them.

“Every piece on this programme has some kind of connection to love, and it goes beyond just myself ‘loving’ the work. It seeks to showcase various periods (baroque, classical, romantic, post-romantic) and how they each uniquely express love musically in some cases more explicitly – in the actual title, or more implicitly – in the history or character of the particular work. Whether it be Bach’s love for his wife, Bartok’s deep admiration and love for Bach, Beethoven’s romance, the Spanish charm of Sarasate’s Andalusian Romance, the simplicity of love for beauty in the poem the Last Rose of Summer, or within the theme of Gounod’s Faust, this recital is an opportunity to hear a composer’s manifestation of love within music in a variety of stunning and often intricate ways.”
– Jacques Forestier

  • Sarasate Romanza Adaluza
  • Bach Chaconne
  • Bartok Solo Sonata I. Tempo di Ciaccona
  • Beethoven G Major Romance
  • Ernst Last Rose of Summer
  • Faust Fantasy Wieniawski

Hailed by CBC Music as one of the “Top 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30”, violinist Jacques Forestier began playing the violin at the age of two, and has since delighted audiences in concert halls across North America, Europe, and Asia. A recipient of the Thomas. D Watkins Fellowship at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Jacques is a student of Shmuel Ashkenasi and Pamela Frank, as well as Itzhak Perlman at the Perlman Music Program. Jacques made his debut with the Edmonton Symphony and Bill Eddins at the age of 11 and enjoyed most recently appearing with them for a pair of concerts in April. He has since gone on to perform with orchestras as a soloist internationally.

The 1st Prize Laureate of the Shean Strings Competition, Jacques also took the Silver Medal and Bach Prize at the 2022 Stulberg International Strings Competition, as well as top prizes at international competitions including the Irving M. Klein, Johansen, and OSM Manulife. Jacques is grateful for the support of many and would like to thank the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Anne Burrows Foundation for their generosity in supporting his growth as a musician.

Praised by Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle for her “elegance and verve,” pianist Elizabeth Dorman enjoys performing music both new and old as a soloist and chamber musician. A finalist of the 2018 Leipzig International Bach Competition, Elizabeth has been widely recognized as a leading performer for her inquisitive interpretations of Bach’s music on the modern piano. Elizabeth has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Louisville Orchestra, the Leipzig Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Folsom Lake Symphony, the Stanford Summer Symphony, Symphony Parnassus, as a soloist for interdisciplinary projects at New World Symphony, and as a keyboardist at the San Francisco Symphony. She can be heard on Delos records as a concerto soloist with Santa Rosa Symphony’s new album celebrating the music of Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and this season will perform as a soloist with California Symphony and Vallejo Symphony.

She has been presented as a soloist and chamber musician at venues including the Kennedy Center, Davies Symphony Hall, Herbst Theater, Merkin Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, Leipzig’s Hochschule für Musik, and her live solo performances have been nationally broadcast on NPR and public radio. Elizabeth is the Assistant Artistic Director at the Archipelago Collective, a chamber music festival in the San Juan Islands, and has appeared at other festivals including Tanglewood, Britt, Sarasota, Aspen, Toronto Summer Music, Icicle Creek, and the Banff Centre. Elizabeth was awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University in 2019 where she studied with Gilbert Kalish and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Maybeck Studio for the Performing Arts is a small performance space located in a private home in the Berkeley hills, built in 1914 by Bernard Maybeck. The studio has a rich tradition of musical performances dating back over 100 years.
